They’re decadent, chocolate-y, romantic, even heart-shaped: Chocolate-covered strawberries have long been a can’t-miss staple of Valentine’s Day, and whether you head to your favorite sweet shop to pick up a dozen (or so) or make them yourself, be sure your sweetheart doesn’t miss out on these delicious treats.
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 tablespoons shortening
2 pints medium-large strawberries
1. Melt the chocolate chips and shortening in a double boiler pan, stirring until smooth.
2. With a toothpick inserted in the strawberry, dip the lower half into the chocolate and allow excess to drip back into the pan.
3. Place dipped strawberries on baking sheets lined with parchment or waxed paper.
4. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Best if eaten within a few hours.
